Gone With The Wind- Iconic Review

The rest of my Iconic Movie Reviews have been very positive. However, I can say with the utmost certainty that I dislike this film. Yes, it is iconic and if you are like me and want to see every truly iconic film in cinema, see it. This is definitely one of the most known films of all time. However, it is actually unenjoyable.

The story revolves around a girl named Scarlett who is a horrible person. In the first scene she manipulates two boys, expresses her love for a married man, and plans to get him to leave his wife for her. When the man doesn’t later in the film, she marries her sister’s crush, who is coincidently the brother of the man she wants. She continues to manipulate people and think only of her self and her feelings. She believes it is only important for her to succeed. Trust me, the only reason “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn!” is such an amazing and impactful line is because the whole movie is just building up her horribleness. I found myself waiting for that line for the whole 4-hr running time. That brings me to my next point, this film is way to long. It caps in at just less than 4 hours and some of it is really unnecessary. Several sequences could be cut out of the film, especially near the end, without anything being missed. I won’t go into too much detail but there are certainly some unneeded characters.

With all that being said, the film is very well paced. The 4 hours feels concise and the story is told well. All of the characters are supremely acted and have reasonable goals. Butler is by far the best part of this film, as he is the only one allowed to make jokes. The romance side of the story is as iconic as any other and the general message is good. If you want to sit down for 4 hours and want to watch something not-so-complex yet still enticing, want Gone with the Wind. If you love romances (especially of the will-they-or-won’t-they variety) watch Gone with the Wind, and if you love iconic and old films watch Gone with The Wind. If you want to watch a good film with interesting characters and an interesting plot, watch something else. It’ll save you time and it will be more fun.
